Often parishes require those who are asked to serve as godparents at Baptism or Confirmation receive a certificate from their parish. Such certificates require that the Pastor certify that a proposed sponsor is not only a baptized, confirmed Catholic but also one who practices his/her faith. The pratrice of the faith assumes that a person is not only registered in the parish but also present at the Eucharist each weekend., and if married, is married validly in the Church. Accepting the role of sponsor for the Sacraments of Baptism or Confirmation is a very serious matter, for in doing so, the sponsor is making a public commitment to assist in forming the child in the pratrice of the faith. Therefore, persons not registered and present at Mass regularly in this parish should not ask the parish priest to certify that this is the case. Parents of children to be Baptized and candidates for Confirmation should take special care to invite only those who are eligible for this role to fulfill this responsibility. The practice of one's faith is one's own choice, but if a person chooses not to participate in the Eucharist each Sunday then he/she should not at the same time expect to be granted the privileges which are reserved for those who do.
As a Godparent, your responsibility is to foster the faith of your godchild and to reflect to your godchild the meaning of life of Catholic discipleship. The Code of Canon Law (Church Law) specifies the requirements for serving as a Godparent (Canon 874): You may not be the parent of the person being baptized; you must be at least 16 years old; you must be fully initiated (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist); if married, be in a valid Catholic marriage; and live a life of active faith in the Catholic Church.
I understand the requirements of being a Baptism/Confirmation godparent.
Please submit the form and if possible you will be able to pick up your Sponsor Certificate for your signature and Parish Seal.
